Love not landfill.
Mattress waste is a big issue… a really big issue. It is our collective responsibility to reduce landfill and recycle diligently. We should all live by this concept even when it comes to difficult things to dispose of such as mattresses, rather than defaulting to landfill when better options like arranging a proper mattress pickup and recycling service exist.
If you take a moment to think about how much space a million discarded mattresses would take up, the space required is really, really, big. It is hard to imagine, but let’s take the time to give a couple of visual examples to put this concept into perspective.
To start with, let’s talk about how there is no enchanting expanse known as Mattress Meadows. An imaginative place where rolling hills are adorned not with grass, but with mattresses. This place does not exist. However, the number mattresses discarded each year, could create a real-life Mattress Meadows. If we don’t act now, it is probably not too far of becoming a less picturesque reality.
It is estimated over 1.8 million mattresses are discarded of each year in Australia. If they were lined up end-to-end, they would stretch from Darwin to Hobart. Woah. Thinking of the cumulative impact of this every year is mind boggling.
Every two years The National Waste Report is released and provides key insights into how much waste we are producing as a nation. Over the last 15 years Australia’s waste generation has increased by over 20%. This is something we need to be super mindful of as a society.
Each year as our population grows, waste generation grows along with it. In 2020-21, Australia generated 75.8 mega tonnes (Mt) of total waste. This amount of waste is roughly equivalent to the weight of 471 Sydney Opera Houses. There is only so many years in a row that we can keep adding 471 Sydney Opera Houses of waste into landfill before out beautiful countryside all becomes a waste land.
Once the mattress recycling company has picked up your unwanted mattress, we either deconstruct it down to single source materials to be recycled or, it goes through out on-site refurbishment plant to be rejuvenated and made available to people in disadvantaged groups. Our mattress rejuvenation prevents your old mattress adding to landfill waste and you can feel good about it eventually going to someone who really needs it.
We believe we can responsibly handle the disposal process thoroughly, reduce landfill waste and conserve resources all at once, as well as helping those in need. It is a circular system that takes inspiration from mother nature herself, where nothing goes to waste.
On on a more positive note from The National Waste Report, Australia’s recycling rate is growing too. So, this is the good news, keep up the good work! Australia’s recycling rate has increased by over 57% in the last 15 years.
Recycling mattresses is not easy, but that is why we have created The Mattress Recycling Company so that we can be specialty providers in this space. We make mattress recycling easy for all our customers, because we do all the hard work for you. All we need from you is the pickup location and we can be there the same day or next day to collect.
Our Mattress Recycling Program takes mattresses destined for landfill and gives them new an extended life. If we can extend the life of an unwanted mattress and avoid it going to landfill at all, then that is what we should do.
If a mattress is in good enough condition, it can be rejuvenated going through our extensive refurbishment plant. Our mattress refurbishing process creates a circular economy where we can help disadvantaged groups and individuals who may have been without a clean and healthy mattress to sleep on. Everyone deserves a good night’s sleep, and we can all help facilitate that need.
