At Forty Winks Geelong, Melton, Ballarat and Horsham, getting a better night’s sleep now comes with a feel-good bonus — doing right by the planet. These stores have teamed up with The Mattress Recycling Company (TMRC) to ensure that every old mattress from their operations is responsibly recycled instead of sent to landfill.
Through this collaboration, over 75% of each mattress’s materials — including steel, foam, and fabric — are recovered and reused. It’s a smart, sustainable approach that reduces waste, cuts emissions, and gives valuable materials a second life.
Both Forty Winks and TMRC share a clear belief: sustainability should be practical, not complicated. By working together, they’re helping turn a traditionally waste-heavy process into one that supports Australia’s growing circular economy.
Why Mattress Recycling Matters
Old mattresses are one of the bulkiest items entering landfill. They don’t compact easily, take up valuable space, and can linger in the environment for years. Recycling them diverts tonnes of waste from landfill and reduces the energy, transport, and resources required to manage disposal.
Every mattress recycled is a win for both the environment and the community. Fewer landfill trips mean lower fuel use and greenhouse emissions — and less pressure on local facilities.
Turning Waste into Resources
A discarded mattress is more than waste; it’s a source of reusable materials. TMRC carefully dismantles each one at its Victorian facility so components can re-enter production cycles.
- Steel springs are melted down and reprocessed for manufacturing.
- Foam layers are converted into carpet underlay and soft padding.
- Fabric and timber are separated for reuse or repurposing.
This process keeps materials in circulation, reduces reliance on virgin resources, and promotes a more sustainable materials economy in Australia.
Supporting Local Sustainability
By partnering with The Mattress Recycling Company, Forty Winks stores across Geelong, Melton, Ballarat and Horsham are demonstrating what local environmental leadership looks like in action. This collaboration supports Victorian recycling infrastructure and creates regional employment through collection, deconstruction and materials processing — proving
that environmental responsibility and economic value can go hand in hand. More than a slogan, it’s a practical partnership delivering real impact: fewer mattresses in landfill, more materials given new purpose, and a cleaner, circular future for our communities.
