Landmark Results Include Steel Recovery, Foam Recycling & Material Aid Support Across Victoria
In a powerful demonstration of circular economy in action, The Mattress Recycling Company has released its operational report for September, confirming the collection and processing of 3,974 mattresses across Victoria. The results highlight the organisation’s ongoing leadership in landfill diversion, sustainable material recovery, and community support through reuse initiatives.
A Multi-Stream Recycling Success
- 408 mattresses were identified as 100% foam and were fully recycled, producing clean, reusable material with no residual waste.
- 3,566 mattresses underwent mechanical processing at the company’s facility, where components such as steel, foam, and textiles were separated for recovery.
- 196 bases and 241 mattresses were cleaned, refurbished, or reskinned, and successfully redirected to material aid programs, supporting vulnerable Victorians in transitional housing and crisis recovery.
- 19 mattresses were resold through retail outlets after professional preparation, extending their lifespan and preventing unnecessary disposal.
Tangible Environmental Impact
The month’s recycling effort resulted in the recovery of approximately 44 tonnes of high-grade steel, now returned to the manufacturing supply chain. By volume, the program prevented nearly 2,000 cubic metres of landfill waste — equivalent to the space occupied by 20 double-decker London buses.
These outcomes not only underscore the environmental necessity of mattress recycling, but also position The Mattress Recycling Company as a model for scalable, responsible waste diversion in Victoria.
